In this first year working with Cheltenham we chose to use photograms as key images for the Festival’s various strands of activity.

The Festival design requirements included a programme, flyers, banners and print ads.

For a number of years I have been commissioned by Pictures On Walls to source and work closely with artists to develop their ideas and take them through to the production and publication of their collectable screenprint limited editions.

The role has been a dream job – combining my background in design and art direction with my knowledge and experience with international contemporary artists. Consequently we have been able to collaborate with artists who have been showcased in my books such as Blu, Ericailcane, Sam3 & Vhils to name a few.

Each edition presents its own creative and technical challenges. To bring the artist’s ideas to life we have used a wide variety of papers, techniques and finishes – from embossing to varnishing and even screenprinting with ink and bleach. In the process we have been able to show each artist how to get the most out of the medium while always learning something new ourselves.

Besides the screenprints Pictures on Walls also publishes artists’ books, stickers, zines, newspapers, T-shirts and other merchandise, all of which I have helped design and produce. POW also holds exhibitions and events with which I have been involved, such as helping to curate the two Cans Festivals in London, 2008.

One of the most iconic album covers in recent years has been Think Tank by Blur, for which I project managed the designs for the album, three singles, and vinyl and CD promos, as well as the press ads, posters and large-sized fly sheets required for the press and PR campaigns.

Inbetween Time is a unique Festival of live art and intrigue which takes place each year at the Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol’s contemporary art centre.  This was a particularly interesting design brief to tackle as the main stipulation was that the design should use the colours that had become associated with the Festival and the imagery reflect the anarchic and strange world of performance art.  Our response was a mix of haunting ACSII text portraits, subversive information graphics and hazard signs.  The project required various printed matter, flyers, posters, leaflets, banners as well as on site design within Arnolfini’s gallery space.

Our response to the brief was a mix of  haunting ACSII text portraits, subversive information graphics and hazards signs. Vinyl stickers were used to signpost the events along with plenty of hazard tape. Design for Tijuana Design.

Part of the regular family of festivals produced by Cheltenham Festivals, Cheltenham Jazz Festival was a wonderful event to work for.  I managed this particular project creating an identity for the Jazz Festival across all print and publicity.  The Festival wanted to avoid the stereotypical imagery that you might expect from Jazz so instead we referenced the venue’s splendid flocked wallpaper (a feature of the Cheltenham Town Hall) and created visuals that gave the event a recognisable tongue-in-cheek theme.

The Cheltenham Science Festival was looking to reach new audiences so our approach was to make the imagery fun and friendly with a 1950s retro-future theme while retaining a clear science background.
