This week I was invited to Lisbon to take part in the Red Bull street gallery project. Although it was sponsored by a commercial brand, Red Bull guaranteed a non-interference stance. The idea was that 10 Portuguese urban artists from a variety of backgrounds would put out work in the streets for the International Museum Day – to create alternative public museums/galleries for the day. The artists were given all they needed in order to carry out their individual pieces which were placed nearby to famous gallery institutions.

My role was to give an informal lecture, which was held on a roof terrace in the Barrio Alto during the evening. It was a chance to share stories, ideas and experiences and to get to know these young up-and-coming artists.

Since I started work on my last book Graffiti Brasil a few years ago I became a fan of the Choque Cultural gallery in Sao Paulo.
A few years later I am proud to be partnering with them with a worldwide on-line store and gallery

In the next months we’ll be producing new screenprints which will be available worldwide.

I’ve added a few new prints for sale to the http://www.graffitibrasil.com site. Top image by Atsuo and bottom image, one of 8 new screenprints by Speto. In preparation is a new website http://www.choquecultural.co.uk which is a joint venture between myself and the Choque Cultural gallery in Sao Paulo. This website will continue to sell screenprints by graffiti and other young artists but with closer ties to the gallery.

Spent a long weekend in New York. Feeling bad about my eco footprint but I was desperate to support a show that was significant for me. Eight artists from my Graffiti Brasil book had been invited for a group show at the Jonathan Levine gallery. There are various blogs where you can read about the show for example - http://groups.imeem.com, http://choqueculturalny.blogspot.com/ & http://www.resfest.com.br/lifeblog/flaviosamelo/ I wrote some text for the catalogue which you can buy from Jonathan Levine.

In Sao Paulo, there are apparently only two print shops left that still use traditional woodblock printing, I was lucky enough to visit one of them. Generally they are kept busy by a regular trade for flyposting advertising gigs around the city. Due to the city cracking down on flyposting the days of woodblock printing may be numbered. The posters are known as Lambe Lambe which translates and “lick-lick” refering to the way they are pasted on the walls.

Below examples of Lambe-lambe on the streets. Noite de Mini Saia (Night of the mini skirts)

Back from my travels in Sao Paulo. I’ve been researching various forms of printmaking - screenprinting, letterpress and wood cuts. Above: My friends Mariana and Baxio from Choque Cultural Gallery and Louise and Ignacio from Lost Art
